Prospect Update: May Edition
's been a busy month for Winterhawks prospects between tournament play and adding new players via the WHL Bantam Draft and roster additions.
Winterhawks Prospect Central: 2019 WHL Bantam Draft | Prospect Pool In addition to the protected list changing after the Bantam Draft, the Winterhawks listed Devin Benson (5-10, 150lbs) on May 9. The right-handed defenseman from Kamloops, BC was a former 7th round draft pick of the Medicine Hat Tigers in 2018. He played for Yale Hockey Academy Elite 15 this past season, posting 17 assists in 31 games.
Portland dropped Ryan Miley from its protected list to make room for the addition of Benson.
Six 2019 Portland draft picks were invited to Under-16 Provincial Camps later this summer. Kyle Chyzowski, Carter Streek and Josh Mori will represent Team British Columbia; Landon Van Engelen and Marcus Nguyen were named to the Team Alberta camp roster; and Ryder Thompson will represent Team Manitoba. These provincial camps will help determine rosters for the 2019 WHL Cup in Calgary.
A handful of Winterhawks prospects played in the World Selects Invitational tournament in Philadelphia from May 4-8 and had an exceptional showing.
Defenseman Max Burkholder was named the top defenseman of the 2003 division at the World Selects Invitational after scoring two goals and six assists for eight points in eight games. In addition to the tournament recognition, last week Burkholder was named Minnesota's 2019 Bantam Hockey Player of the Year. As team captain, he helped Chaska-Chanhassen to a runner-up finish at the Bantam AA State Tournament. Burkholder follows in the footsteps of Buffalo Sabres rookie Casey Mittelstadt, who was a former recipient of the Bantam Player of the Year award.
Goaltender Jack Stark, a Blue Army teammate of Burkholder's, led all 2003-born players with five wins, two shutouts, a 1.00 goals against average and an impeccable .956 save-percentage.
Maddox Fleming, the Winterhawks 2019 12th round selection, led the 2004 division at the World Selects Invitational with 2.12 points per game. He scored six goals and 11 assists for 17 points in just eight games. Fellow draft pick Jimmy Snuggerud cracked the top-20 leader board at the event, scoring six goals and three assists for nine points in nine games with the East Coast Selects.
Defensive prospect Ryan Johnson is playing in the USHL Championship Series with the Sioux Falls Stampede.
