The Charlottetown Islanders will face a significant test on Friday night when they welcome the Victoriaville Tigres to town for the only time this season.
The Islanders (11-12-2-0) picked up a shootout victory over the Cape Breton Eagles on Sunday afternoon. Charlottetown got out to a two-goal lead before Cape Breton came back late in the third period. Giovanni Morneau and Jakub Brabenec eventually sealed the deal in the shootout.
The Tigres (17-6-1-2) are one of the QMJHL's surprise teams this year, sitting near the top of the strong Western Conference, just two points behind the conference-leading Sherbrooke Phoenix. Like Charlottetown, Victoriaville's last game was a victory over the Cape Breton Eagles, a 2-1 decision on Wednesday night.
Charlottetown and Victoriaville have recent history; the Tigres eliminated the Islanders from the 2021 Playoffs in the semi-finals, en route to Victoriaville's President Cup victory.
ROSTER UPDATES
Charlottetown
Franky Lapenna is scheduled to make his 23rd start of the season for the Islanders. Sam Bowness is the lone player unavailable to Head Coach Jim Hulton as he is day-to-day due to a sickness.
Victoriaville
Forwards Tommy Montreuil is listed as injured along with Elliot Simard, who is out 4-6 weeks with a lower-body injury. Defenseman Pierre-Marc Minville did not dress on Wednesday due to a sickness; his status is unknown heading into tonight's game. The Tigres recalled 2022 third-round pick Noah Larochelle for this Maritimes road trip.
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Charlottetown
Giovanni Morneau picked up two goals in regulation along with a shootout goal against the Eagles on Sunday. Morneau had a fantastic November with 12 points in 12 games.
Lucas Romeofollowed up the best performance of his major junior career with another assist against the Eagles. Following a five-game pointless streak, Romeo is heating up heading into December with four points in his past two games.
Victoriaville
Goaltender Nathan Darveau has been lights out between the pipes for the Tigres, leading all qualified goaltenders with a .942 save percentage in 21 games this season. He was recently named the CHL's Goaltender of the Month with his performance.
Pierre-Olivier Roy has quietly put together a fantastic season from the Tigres blueline. The 18-year-old defender sits second among all QMJHL players with 28 assists through 26 games. Prior to the team's game in Cape Breton, Roy had 9 assists in the previous four games.
SERIES AT A GLANCE
The Islanders and Tigres haven't played this year; Charlottetown defeated Victoriaville in both matchups last season.
