Power vs. Legends - Game Notes - July 4, 2013

THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia lost to Hagerstown 3-0 yesterday and were swept in three games by the Suns. Luis Heredia took the loss for the Power after pitched five innings and allowing a run on three hits. The Suns scored in the first inning off Heredia, then capped the scoring by adding two in the sixth, after Heredia left the game. Despite registering five hits Wednesday night, the Power offense was shutout for the seventh time this season. West Virginia's first baseman Jordan Steranka had the most productive day on offense, scrapping two doubles in three at-bats.

UNDER THE RUG: Wednesday's loss to Hagerstown means the Power were swept for the third time this season and just the first time on the road. The last time West Virginia was swept was May 27-29 against the Greensboro Grasshoppers. The Power were also swept in three games against the Charleston Riverdogs April 8-10. Last season, opponents swept West Virginia five times, all of which came in the first half when West Virginia finished 23-47 and in last place in the Northern Division.

GOODBYE HUB CITY: West Virginia's loss Wednesday finished the season series with the Hagerstown Suns. The Suns won the season series against the Power 8-5 and also lead the all-time series 64-69. The Power have a chance an opportunity to play the Suns again, but must make the playoffs in order face the first-half champions.

SOUTH BOUND TRAIN: West Virginia begins a four game series tonight with the Lexington Legends, whose 9-5 record is the best in the Southern Division. This season, the Power are 4-4 against the Legends this season and are 22-17 against the entire Southern Division. West Virginia hasn't played anybody in the southern division since the Legends May 16-19. The Power will play 15 games against members of the Southern Division this month and have 28 games remaining overall against the Southern Division.

BRADENTON BOUND: After Pat Ludwig was promoted Monday to Bradenton, a pair of Power infielders also received the call to the Marauders Thursday. Third baseman D.J. Crumlich appeared in 51 games for West Virginia, and batting .253 with 20 RBI. The 23-year-old committed six errors in the field. Middle infielder Ashley Ponce also joins Crumlich on the trip to Florida. The 22-year-old batted .244 in 36 games with West Virginia. However, Ponce showed good defense all season, committing only two errors.

NEW FACES IN CHARLESTON: With the loss of Crumlich and Ponce, the Power activated infielder Chris Diaz from the disabled list Thursday. Diaz appeared in nine games with the GCL Pirates this season, batting .240 with five RBI. The 11th round pick last year was promoted to the Power June 11th from the GCL then immediately placed on the DL. Along with Diaz, last season's 26th round selection Jimmy Rider has promoted from the Jamestown Roster. Rider played nine games with the Jammers at second and third, batting .207 with seven RBI.

POWER POINTS: Kawika Emsley-Pai has a five game hitting streak entering his next game, the longest current streak by a Power player... Luis Heredia is scheduled to make his next two starts on the road... West Virginia was outscored in the Hagerstown series 13-3 and on the road trip 28-22.

PROMO UPDATE: SAT. JULY 20TH- STATE CAPITAL REPLICA GIVEAWAY: The first 1,000 fans at Appalachian Power Park will receive a State Capital Replica presented by the WV Division of Rehabilitation as the Power take on the Kannapolis Intimidators at 7:05.

AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh beat Philadelphia 6-5. Jeff Locke picked up his eighth win of the season and Pedro Alvarez hit his 21st home run of the season... Indianapolis gave up three runs in the ninth to Louisville and lost 4-3 on the road... Altoona defeated Binghamton 6-3 as former Power Gregory Polanco went 2-4 with an RBI... Orlando Castro pitched five innings, allowing two runs and received a no-decision in a 11-5 Marauders loss to Fort Myers... Jamestown split a doubleheader against Mahoning Valley, losing game one 5-3 and defeating the Scrappers in game two 7-3.
