Stockton Ports News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. - Just 12 hours after completing a game in which they allowed 15 hits, the Stockton Ports pitching staff shined on Thursday afternoon at Banner Island Ballpark. Stockton pitching allowed just four hits and got enough timely hitting to squeak by the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes by a final of 2-1 to take the rubber game of a three-game series.

Each team plated a run in the second inning as Ports starter Jake Bray gave up a two-out solo homer to Jeren Kendall that gave the Quakes a 1-0 lead. The homer was one of just two hits allowed by Bray, however, in what was otherwise a career-best outing. Bray pitched five innings and allowed just the one run while striking out a career-high nine without issuing a walk.

Stockton tied the score in the bottom of the second as Dairon Blanco drew a leadoff walk and, after a steal and a groundout, found himself at third base with two outs. Brallan Perez singled to right field to plate Blanco and tie the game at 1-1. It was the only run given up by Quakes starter Chris Mathewson who did not factor into the decision after going four innings and allowing five hits while striking out one.

Will Gilbert (3-0) took over in the sixth and gave up a single and two walks with two outs but managed to escape the bases-loaded jam by getting Omar Estevez to ground out to third. Stockton, facing Isaac Anderson (0-4) in the bottom of the sixth, would have Jonah Heim draw a one-out walk. Heim advanced to second on a passed ball and with two outs in the inning, Luis Barrera delivered an RBI single to right that scored Heim and give the Ports a 2-1 lead.

The go-ahead run would be unearned for Anderson who suffered the loss after an inning-and-two-thirds in relief

Gilbert would pick up the win after working two scoreless innings, allowing two hits while pitching around two walks and striking out one.

Miguel Romero (SV, 8) came on in the eighth and hurled two perfect innings to notch his eighth save of the season. Romero struck out three of the six batters he faced.

After taking two of three from Rancho Cucamonga, the Ports welcome the San Jose Giants to Banner Island Ballpark for a three-game series beginning on Friday night. Logan Shore (2-0, 1.69 ERA) gets the ball for Stockton in the series opener, opposed by San Jose right-hander Logan Webb (1-2, 2.35 ERA). First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. PDT.
