Trenton Thunder News Release
(New Britain, CT) - Zach Nuding and two relievers combined on a six-hitter and Trenton scored five runs against former big-league hurler Nick Blackburn as the Thunder topped the New Britain Rock Cats, 6-1, Saturday night at New Britain Stadium to win for the sixth time in the last seven games.
Cesar Cabral and Tommy Kahnle each tossed two perfect innings as the Thunder finished the game by retiring the final 13 Rock Cats batters. Trenton has taken two of the first three games in the series and allowed only four total runs in those contests.
Nuding (3-10) worked five innings and allowed six hits and two walks, but stranded seven runners on base to earn the win. Angel Morales' solo home run in the third put New Britain ahead 1-0.
But Trenton rallied for five two-out runs in the fourth and fifth against Blackburn (0-1), who made his first start since being promoted from the GCL Twins yesterday. Reggie Corona's two-run single put the Thunder ahead 2-1 in the fourth, and Casey Stevenson followed with an RBI double.
With runners at first and second base in the fifth, Andrew Clark slugged a two-run double off the top of the right field fence that scored both Jeff Farnham and Slade Heathcott. Blackburn allowed five runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings.
Heathcott went 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI to pace Trenton's eight-hit attack. Morales had two of New Britain's six base knocks.
The finale of the four-game series will be played Sunday afternoon with first pitch slated for 1:35pm. Thunder right-hander Shane Greene (3-1, 3.86) is expected to be activated from the DL and pitch against Rock Cats right-hander Virgil Vazquez (1-2, 3.04). Radio coverage on 91.3 FM (WTSR) and also streaming online begins at 1:20 pm.
