Pigs Take Finale in Charlotte

June 10, 2018 - International League (IL1)
Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release

A pair of Joey Meneses home runs and seven strong innings from Cole Irvin (8-1) lifted the Lehigh Valley IronPigs to a 6-2 victory in Sunday's series finale at BB&T Ballpark. Irvin is now the first Pig in history to win seven straight starts and has an IL-leading eight wins on the season.

Irvin has now allowed just two runs in 15 2/3 innings pitched against the Knights this season. After tossing 8 2/3 scoreless against Charlotte on May 30, Irvin scattered five hits over seven innings and struck out five. Irvin has gone at least six innings in all but two starts and hasn't lost a start since April 14.

For the second night in a row the Pigs jumped out to an early lead. They got to Knights starter Carson Fulmer (2-2) for five runs in his five innings of work. Meneses set the tone early with a two-run home run in the opening frame before striking again in the third to make it 4-0. Adding two more in the top of the fourth, the Pigs scored an unearned run and a RBI single by Dean Anna to build their 6-0 lead.

Both of Fulmer's losses this season have come against the IronPigs. On Sunday, he surrendered both of Meneses' home runs and allowed nine hits in five innings.

The bullpen backed up the strong start from Irvin with two perfect innings. Zac Curtis struck out two in the eighth before turning the ball over to Austin Davis who tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to wrap up the victory for the Pigs.

Meneses carried the offense and now leads the team with 12 home runs. This was the first time since May of last year that Meneses had a multi-homer game. Driving in four, Meneses now has 35 RBI on the season.

The Pigs return home on Monday, June 11, for an eight-game homestand against the Buffalo Bisons and Pawtucket Red Sox. The Pigs and Bisons will play a Monday-Wednesday with a Tuesday twin bill before the PawSox come to town for a four-game series that runs through the weekend.

The 2018 Season is the IronPigs' 11th season at Coca-Cola Park and 11th as the top affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies.
