Phegley and Rienzo Named to Sirius XM All-Star Futures Game

June 27, 2013 - International League (IL) - Charlotte Knights News Release

Fort Mill, SC - The Charlotte Knights will be well represented at the 15th Annual Sirius XM All-Star Futures Game on All-Star Sunday, July 14, at Citi Field in New York. Catcher Josh Phegley and right-handed pitcher Andre Rienzo were both chosen by Major League Baseball on Wednesday. Phegley will represent the U.S. Team, while Rienzo, a Brazilian native, will be on the World Team.

Phegley, 25, has enjoyed a remarkable 2013 season for the Knights. The team's hard-hitting backstop is currently batting .314 with a team-high 13 home runs and 36 RBIs over 55 games. The Indiana native leads all International League catchers in nearly every offensive category this season. Phegley is ranked by Baseball America as the 18th-best prospect in the White Sox system. His stellar defense also earned him the 2012 Rawlings MiLB Gold Glove Award.

Rienzo, who will start for the Knights tonight in game three of Charlotte's four-game series in Louisville, KY, is currently 5-5 with a 5.33 ERA this season. Rienzo, who is in his first full season with the Knights, is ranked by Baseball America as the seventh-best prospect in the White Sox system. The 25-year-old right-hander posted a 3-0 mark with a 1.08 ERA in four games for Winston-Salem (A) last season. He was then promoted to Double-A later in the year and went 4-3 with a 3.27 ERA in 13 starts for Birmingham (AA).

40 of the 50 players competing in this year's game will be competing in it for the first time. The U.S. Team will be managed by former New York Mets star and 1986 World Series hero Mookie Wilson. Edgardo Alfonzo, another former Mets star, will manage the World Team. Alfonzo was a career .284 hitter over 12 Major League seasons.
