Phantoms' Lowney and Romeo Earn USHL Honors
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Defenseman Ryan Lowney and goaltender Sean Romeo played their ways into the record books last week as the Youngstown Phantoms came away with three wins in as many games. Monday, the United States Hockey League recognized the pair's accomplishments by naming Lowney its CCM Defensive Player of the Week and Romeo its Reebok Goaltender of the Week.
This is the first time that either Lowney or Romeo has earned the USHL's weekly honors and third time a Phantoms player has done so this season.
"I could not be happier for Sean and Ryan," head coach Anthony Noreen said. "They played as big a part in the huge week we had as anyone. This is well-earned and well-deserved."
Lowney, 18, scored a goal and added six assists for seven points and a plus-5 ratings over the three games last week. The second-year defenseman set a franchise record when he assisted on each of Youngstown's five goals - four coming on the power play - in a 5-3 win over the Indiana Ice Wednesday. Lowney's five assists also tied the USHL Tier 1 era (2002-present) record for assists in a game while setting a new high mark for defensemen.
The Ferris State recruit followed that up by recording a power-play goal and team-high plus-4 rating in a 6-0 over Team USA Friday. Lowney added another assist the following night as the Phantoms shut out Team USA for a second straight game, winning 3-0.
The Redford, Mich. native has registered 3-10-13 through 20 games this season and is currently tied for third in scoring among USHL defenseman.
"Ryan is an offensive defenseman, but he also really takes care of things on the defensive side that he doesn't always get credit for because it doesn't show up on the score sheet," Noreen said. "It was nice to see him rewarded not only with the points last week, but also with the success in the other end."
Romeo, 18, was between the pipes for all three of the Phantoms' wins last week posting a 1.00 goals against average and .962 save percentage over the span. One day after being included on NHL Central Scouting's preliminary rankings for the 2013 NHL Draft, the Cary, N.C. native made 31 saves in the win in Indiana. Romeo followed that up with two straight shutouts - the first two of his USHL career - turning away 23 shots Friday and 24 shots Saturday as the Phantoms swept Team USA in the Covelli Centre.
Romeo became the first goaltender in the Phantoms' four-year history to record multiple shutouts - both in a career and in a single season season - let a lone back-to-back. The third-year netminder has won each of his past four starts and has gone 137 minutes without surrendering a goal.
"Sean's demeanor in net from the beginning of the week through the end was great," Noreen said. "You could look at him and you would never know if the team was up 10-0 or down 10-0.
"That's what you need back there in net - a guy who can be a rock and give you a chance to win every night - and that's what we've come to expect, and what we've gotten, from Sean."
