Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
Philadelphia, Pa. (Friday, May 7, 2004) - Jeff Carter scored a power play at 15:20 of overtime to lift the Philadelphia Phantoms to a 3-2 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in Game 2 of the East Division Finals.
"We got a great start," said coach Michel Therrien. "But after we got that lead, we stopped playing our game and we gave them a chance to come back. It's a disappointing loss. There's no doubt about that.
"We're going to need a 60-minute effort to expect to win a hockey game," he said. "This is why I'm disappointed. We don't have 60 minutes of effort right now. We're not going to get away with it. First game we did. Second game we didn't."
The Phantoms scored 56 seconds in on Shane Endicott's hooking penalty as Carter took a pass from Ian MacNeil at the bottom of the left circle and snapped a wrist past goaltender Sebastien Caron to the far post for the game-winning goal.
With the win, the Phantoms evened the series at a game apiece. The best-of-seven series resumes on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. at Wilkes-Barre's Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza. Approximately 1,000 tickets are still available for the game.
Games 3 and 4 will be played in Wilkes-Barre on Saturday and Monday, respectively, before the series returns to Philadelphia for Game 5 on Wednesday (May 10) at the Wachovia Center.
The Penguins jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Shane Endicott and Michel Ouellet. Just 2:41 into the game, Endicott knocked in a rebound for his second goal of the playoffs and then later in the period Ouellet scored a power play goal at 7:27 to give the Pens a 2-0 lead.
Just like the Penguins controlled the first period, the Phantoms did like wise in the second period and tied the game on goals by John Slaney and Dennis Seidenberg. Philadelphia outshot the Penguins, 19-8, and had four power play opportunities in the period.
"We stopped working," said Therrien of the Penguins' second period. "When we work and when we compete, we're able to play against all the teams in the league. That's a tough thing for a coach, to try to make your players work for 60 minutes. They have to realize they have put in the effort for 60 minutes."
Early in the second period, the Phantoms cut the lead to 2-1 as Slaney beat Caron with a slap shot form the top of the left circle at 4:02 for his third goal of the playoffs. Late in the period, Seidenberg scored his second goal of the playoffs and second in the last two games at 18:30 to tie the game at 2-2.
"It would have been nice to have two games here," said Therrien. "We split. We're going to have to come home -- with the crowd that we have and the support that we have -- and play some good hockey out there."
"Tomorrow is must win, said Caron. "We got to come out hard, forget about it and focus on the next game."
