Penguins Fall to Utah, 5-3, at Home

WILKES-BARRE, PA (Sunday, November 3, 2002) - Eric Landry scored two goals and Greg Hawgood and Jim Montgomery each recorded a goal and an assist as the Utah Grizzlies defeated the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, 5-3, before a crowd of 8,304 at the First Union Arena at Casey Plaza.

Goaltender Corey Hirsch made 45 saves as the Grizzlies' snapped their two-game losing streak. Utah was outshot, 48-35, by the Penguins in the game.

Matt Murley led the Penguins with a goal and one assist and goaltender Sebastien Caron made 35 saves in a losing effort for the Penguins.

The Penguins jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Tom Kostopoulos and Murley at 11:03 and 15:59 of the opening period.

But in the second period, the Senators scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-0 lead. Landry scored two power play goals in the second period at 3:34 and 17:44, while Montgomery scored his fourth of the season in between Landry's goals at 11:36.

Toby Petersen tied the game at 3-3 with his second goal of the season 1:20 into the third period. Utah defenseman Greg Hawgood broke the tie with a power play goal 1:39 after Petersen's goal. Late in the game, David Oliver added an insurance goal with 3:55 left in regulation to close out the scoring.

With the win, Utah improves to 5-6-0-0 (11 points), while the Penguins' record falls to 4-5-1 (9 points). With the loss, the Penguins are winless in their last three games (0-2-1) at home.

The Penguins return to action on Wednesday, November 6 when they visit the Philadelphia Phantoms in a special matinee game at 11:05 a.m. at the First Union Spectrum. The game is the first of three consecutive road games for the Penguins.
