Pen Stumbles in Pirates Loss

August 8, 2018 - Appalachian League (ApL) - Bristol Pirates News Release

Bullpen struggles late in the game cost the Bristol Pirates on Tuesday night, as they lost to the Johnson City Cardinals 11-5.

After allowing only one run over the first four innings, Roger Santana allowed four runs -- three earned -- over his final 1 2/3 innings of work to earn his fourth loss of the season. Despite the loss, Santana was able to match his season-high with seven strikeouts -- the third time this season he has reached that mark.

Austin Shields was the only Pirates pitcher to not allow a run in the loss, as he allowed one hit, one walk and struck out one over 2/3 innings pitched. Jacob Webb and Vince Deyzel combined to allow six runs -- five earned -- on five hits and three walks over 2 2/3 innings.

Zac Susi bounced back from his 0-for-3 performance during his Bristol debut on Monday night, finishing 2-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and two runs scored. Mason Martin began the scoring for Bristol with a solo home run to right field for his eighth home run with Bristol and his 12th overall for the year. Martin became the first Pirate with eight or more home runs in a season since Carlos Munoz hit 11 in 2015. The only other extra-base hit of the night for Bristol was a fifth-inning RBI double by Francisco Mepris. Mepris also drew a walk and recorded his 10th steal of the season to move into a tie for fourth- most in the Appalachian League.

The Pirates (21-25) will send Colin Selby to the mound for the series finale on Wednesday night at 7. In his last start, Selby allowed two runs -- one earned -- on six hits and one walk while striking out a career-high eight in a 6-1 loss to the Bluefield Blue Jays.

Wednesday night will be Wonderful Wednesday at Boyce Cox Field, with all fans receiving $1 off one admission for bringing two canned or box food items to be donated to local area charities.
