Montgomery Biscuits News Release

MONTGOMERY - The Montgomery Biscuits (1-1) rode the strong pitching of Tony Peguero and three relievers to a 4-2 victory over the visiting Tennessee Smokies (1-1) Friday night at Montgomery Riverwalk Stadium. A day after the Smokies put 11 runs on the scoreboard against Biscuits pitching, Peguero limited the Tennessee lineup to a pair of runs over six strong innings.

Jeremy Owens and Gabriel Martinez each homered to provide all of the offense Montgomery would need. For Martinez, the towering drive to right field marked his second home run in as many games.

Owens' second inning roundtripper off of Tennessee starter Garrett Mock gave the Biscuits a temporary 2-1 advantage. After the Smokies tied the game in the top of the third on an error by leftfielder Aneudi Cuevas, Montgomery took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame on a Wes Bankston RBI groundout.

Martinez's seventh inning blast added an insurance run, and that was all Peguero and relievers Jose Rodriguez, Jeff Ridgway, and Juan Salas would need.

Peguero (1-0) did not walk a batter while striking out three to earn the victory. Closer Salas set the Tennessee side down in order in the ninth, fanning two, to record his second career save. Mock (0-1) takes the loss, giving up three runs on four hits in six innings of work.

The Smokies and the Biscuits play the third game of the five-game series on Saturday night at 7:05. The pitching matchup pits Montgomery's Jim Magrane against Tennessee righthander Steven Jackson.
