Barrie Colts News Release
Barrie, ON- The Barrie Colts have announced today that forwards Tanner Pearson and Mark Scheifele have been invited to Team Canada's 2012 National Junior Team Selection Camp in Calgary, Alberta.
Hockey Canada and the Canadian Hockey League announced on Monday that a total of 39 players have been invited to the camp that runs from December 10th to 14th.
Both players recently competed in the Subway Super Series and are thrilled to be invited to play for Team Canada.
"Well this is an honour," said Scheifele. "Every kid dreams of representing his country and I look forward to this challenge."
Scheifele was drafted 7th overall in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and played seven games for the Winnipeg Jets this season before returning to the Barrie Colts.
Tanner Pearson leads the Ontario Hockey League with 56 points in 25 games played.
"I'm very happy to get the invite and it will be a lot of fun to get to go there with Mark," said Pearson. "I'm going to work my hardest and help out any way that I can in order to make that team."
Pearson, 19 years old from Kitchener, has been named OHL Player of the Week twice this season and leads the league in assists and points and sits third in goals scored. He has failed to get a point in only two of 25 games this year and is currently riding a 12 game point streak.
Mark Scheifele, 18 years old from Kitchener, has played in just 14 games for Barrie since returning from Winnipeg and is fourth in team scoring with nine goals and 17 assists.
Team Canada earned a silver medal at the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship in Buffalo.
The final roster will be announced at the end of camp on December 14th.
Canada's National Junior Team will play in three pre-competition games prior to the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship December 26th, 2011 to January 5th, 2012 in Calgary and Edmonton.
