Peacock, Chiefs One-Hit Clippers

Brad Peacock carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning as the Syracuse Chiefs (45-58), the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, beat the Columbus Clippers (65-40) 2-0 Wednesday at Alliance Bank Stadium. Peacock gave up a double to start the eighth, but that was the only hit for the Clippers throughout the game.

Although the Chiefs righthander walked two batters in the first two innings, Columbus never really threatened to get a hit until the third. With one on and one down, Jason Donald blasted a shot to right-center field, but Corey Brown chased it down and made the catch on the run near the warning track to hold Columbus hitless early.

Peacock walked his fourth batter of the night to start the fourth but got into a rhythm after that. He struck out two straight Clippers to help him get out of the frame, and the Chiefs offense gave him some run support in the bottom of the inning.

Michael Aubrey started the run with a one-out double and advanced to third on a Chris Marrero single in the next at-bat. Jesus Valdez then chopped a ground ball to short but just beat out the double play throw to first, allowing Aubrey to come home for the game's first run. Tug Hulett doubled the Chiefs lead one batter later with an RBI triple to the right field corner that put Syracuse up 2-0.

From there, Peacock shined through the seventh. The only baserunner that reached for the Clippers in that span came on a Hulett error in the fifth.

But Peacock's day finally came to a close in the eighth when Beau Mills crushed a double off the center field wall to end the no-hit bid. The righty finished with seven strikeouts, four walks and the one hit allowed through his seven-plus innings of work.

Collin Balester took over in relief after Mills' double and started by walking Paul Phillips. Balester responded with back-to-back strikeouts but walked Luis Valbuena to load the bases. That drew righty Josh Wilkie out of the bullpen, and he got Cord Phelps to hit into an inning-ending groundout.

Wilkie then dealt a hitless ninth to secure the one-hit shutout for the Chiefs.

The teams will resume their series Thursday at 7:00 at Alliance Bank Stadium. Chiefs lefthander Tommy Milone will take the mound against Clippers righthander Zach McAllister.
