PBL TEAM FINALS REPORTS

Game 1

April 22, 2010

Blue Cross Arena at Rochester Community War Memorial, Rochester, N.Y.

The Premier Basketball League 2010 finals featured two teams that put together a combined 34-6 record in the regular season. Both teams dominated their first-round opponents in the playoff semifinals, and now it was time to settle the PBL championship, one and for all, on the hardwood.

The first game was a classic, with the lead swinging back and forth each time. DeAnthony Bowden scored eight first quarter points as the Cavalry took a 31-25 lead. Glen Dandridge started hot hitting two 3-pointers to lead the 'Sharks. Rochester took the lead with 5:16 remaining in the half. The Cavs fought back with Elvin Mims scoring nine of his 15 points in the second quarter. Lincoln Smith led the Razorsharks with 12 points in the first half as they trailed 59-50 after two quarters.

During the third quarter the teams battled back and forth as Rochester grabbed a 77-76 lead. Keith Friel scored seven points including two 3-pointers. Brandon Dean led the Cavalry with six points in the third. Derik Hollyfield hit the free throw that sent the game into overtime after being fouled with 9.5 seconds left in the fourth. Rochester had a chance to win the game in regulation, but they missed three prior free throws. So for the first time in PBL history, a finals game would require an extra period of play.

In overtime, Glen Dandridge buried the three that proved to be the difference in the game as well as scoring seven points in the period. The Sharks left Blue Cross Arena with a 110-106 overtime victory, with four players from the Lilac City crew scoring in double figures. Glen Dandridge and Lincoln Smith each had 20 points; while Keith Friel added 17 points and Melvin Council finished with 13. Lawton-Fort Sill's Elvin Mims had a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds, leading the Cavalry in both categories. Other top scorers were Jamaal Davis (17), Eddie Smith (16), Rashad Woods (14), DeAnthony Bowden (13) and Brandon Dean (11).

Game 3

April 27, 2010

Great Plains Coliseum, Lawton, Okla.

The Lawton-Fort Sill Cavalry burst out of the gate in the third and deciding game of the PBL championship series, leading 31-17 in the first half and holding back every single Rochester Razorsharks challenge. Spurred by another double-double from Elvin Mims (26 pts, 13 rebs) and 23 points from Eddie Smith - including 15 points from the free-throw line - the Lawton-Fort Sill Cavalry ended the Razorsharks' reign as PBL champions, winning 126-108. Derik Holyfield came off the bench to score 24 points for Rochester; Jerice Crouch finished with 15 points for the Sharks.

The win makes Lawton-Fort Sill head coach Micheal Ray Richardson the first coach to win championships in two different minor leagues (2010 PBL, 2009 CBA, 2008 CBA) since Rod Baker turned the trick (2009 PBL, 2008 PBL, 2006 ABA). Richardson also becomes the first minor league basketball head coach to win three consecutive championships, the first to do so since Bill Musselman won four straight titles from 1985 to 1988 in the CBA. Richardson becomes the first coach with prior NBA playing experience to win a PBL championship. The Lawton-Fort Sill Cavalry were perfect at home, winning all ten regular season games and three playoff contests at the Great Plains Coliseum.
