Against United We Fall

Calgary sweeps US weekend foes

1/6/09 - Calgary United had a big, big weekend

sweeping the Stockton Cougars and Wenatchee Fire to improve to 6-3, best in the CMISL Canadian Division.

While division mates Edmonton and Saskatoon were splitting their second straight doubleheader, Calgary was letting a 4-2 halftime lead turn into an 8-5 deficit in Stockton. United composed themselves and reeled off six unanswered goals to stun the PASL-Pro's top US team, 11-8.

Nineteen year old Fran Miron paced Calgary with three goals and fellow 19 year old Milan Timotijevic had two goals and two assists.

After pulling a big upset in Stockton, they had to avoid one the next night in Wenatchee. The winless Fire built a 5-3 lead spurred on by Junior Garcia's second four-goal game of the season, but fell when Chris Kooy broke a late 6-6 tie to let Calgary escape with a 7-6 win.

PASL-Pro League Action

Cincinnati moved to 6-0 by dispatching of Detroit for the third time this year, 9-1. Waza picked itself off the turf and won a wild 11-10 overtime game in West Virginia the next night to avoid a winless season on the road.

St. Louis, who came out blazing in their three home games, lost both ends of a Colorado road trip to the Dynamite and Lightning. The Illusion disappears on the road with an 0-4 record.

KICK STARTERS - Conversations you should be having about the PASL-Pro

Copa America

One bad quarter did in the Texas Outlaws in their trip to Mexico in a 15-7 loss to the Monterrey La Raza. The Outlaws were outscored 7-0 in the second quarter after trailing just 1-0 through 15 minutes. The good news is they now get to play host to La Raza on January 10.

Craig Rhodis, 1790 Cincinnati

The veteran defender is doing his best Daryl Doran imitation, moving into the offense late in his career. Rhodis has racked up four goals and 12 assists in his last four games coming on the heels of a scary rib injury he suffered against Detroit. His secret? "I have been playing midfield to fill injury holes, so that has a lot to do with it, or it could be the rib medication my friend Barry Bonds gave me," he cracked.

Nicola Vignjevic, Edmonton Drillers

One of the best ball handlers in the game, Vignjevic has dealt with bad wheels for years, but he made it back onto the field for three recent games and his impact we felt. The 37 year old former CISL and NPSL star has two goals and three assists in three games.

The Week Ahead

Young Wenatchee gets thrown to the wolves. Or at least "The Wolfman" Erich Geyer, head coach of the Monterrey La Raza. La Raza has won its first two Copa America games by a combined score of 34-11. The PASL-Pro teams and the 0-7 Fire are looking for their first wins.
