Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

SALISBURY, MD - The Lakewood BlueClaws (20-34/46-75) continued to have trouble out of the gate, ran into a hot pitcher, and fell 2-0 to the Delmarva Shorebirds (20-34/51-70) Friday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The loss marked the fourth in a row, and the second time this season they have been shutout on back-to-back occasions (5/3 vs. Charleston, 5/4 vs. Lexington).

The BlueClaws entered the first game against the Shorebirds having trailed after the past 27 innings. That trend continued after the first inning on Friday. Leadoff man Gregory Lorenzo smoked a double off of Ramon Oviedo to begin the game and was driven in Anthony Caronia followed with an RBI single and gave the Shorebirds the early 1-0 lead.

Parker Bridwell took the mound for the tenth time in two years against the BlueClaws and retired the first two hitters he faced. Willie Carmona picked up a single against the righty, but Art Charles struck out to end the inning.

That K was the second of the game, but the first of a seven-strikeout stretch as the righty retired the side in order in the second and the third, all by way of the strikeout.

With two outs and nobody on, in the bottom of the third, the lights went out in the outfield and the game was delayed for 25 minutes. The delay didn't seem to faze either one of the starters as they both retired the side in order in the fourth.

The Shorebirds got to Oviedo (1-3) for another run in the fifth and upped the lead to 2-0. With runners at first and second with one out, Lorenzo connected on another double and plated Nik Balog for the second run.

Bridwell (8-9) retired 14 straight BlueClaws until Angelo Mora reached on an infield single in the sixth. He regrouped and went on to retire the side again in order in the seventh.

The righty was sent back out there for the eighth inning and retired both Brian Pointer and Larry Greene, Jr. by strikeouts and induced a weak pop out to first by Carlos Tocci. His final line went eight scoreless innings and he allowed just two hits, did not walk anyone and added career-high 14 strikeouts.

The 14 Ks by an opposing pitcher ties a franchise-high for the BlueClaws offense. The last pitcher to complete the feat was Dexter Carter of Kannapolis back on July 9th, 2009.

Oviedo worked his five innings and gave up two runs on six hits, a walk and seven strikeouts. Kevin Walter took over the sixth for the righty and tossed two innings of scoreless relief. Chris Burgess pitched for the second day in a row and completed a scoreless eighth.

Mychal Givens was called upon to close out the game for the Shorebirds and preserve Bridwell's outstanding start. The former shortstop turned pitcher struck out the first hitter he faced, induced a weak groundball to second off the bat of Mora and struck out Jiandido Tromp to end the game.
