Jordan Pals Named Florida State League Pitcher-of-the-Week

Palm Beach Cardinals pitcher Jordan Pals was named Florida State League Pitcher-of-the-Week for the July12-18 period.

Pals threw 13 scoreless innings giving up five hits with nine strikeouts en route to two victories after only three starts in the Florida State League. The right-hander out of Eastern Illinois University was the Cardinals 20th-round pick in the 2003 draft. Pals began the season at Peoria (A) compiling a 5-3 record with a 2.84 ERA before being called up on July 4th.

During the week of July 12-18, Pals hurled six innings against Lakeland for a 3-2 win on July 12th and came back to lead Palm Beach to a 4-0 shutout over Western Division leader Tampa in seven innings on July 17th.

Pals is the third pitcher in the Palm Beach Cardinals two-year history to earn a Florida State League Pitcher or Player of the week award. Former Cardinals pitcher Justin Pope, now with the Yankees organization, was the first winning the honor for the week of August 11-17, 2003, while Jared Smith took the honor for the May 10-16 week earlier this season.

WEEK IN REVIEW

Jeff Karstens threw a two-hit shutout for the Tampa Yankees dismantling Palm Beach 3-0 at Roger Dean Stadium on July 16. Karstens gave up a double and a single, and faced just three batters over the minimum while fanning nine batters in 107 pitches. Cardinals' right-hander Mike Wodnicki was the hard luck loser scattering nine hits over seven innings allowing two runs with six strikeouts. The two hits by Palm Beach was the exact same output managed by the Cardinals for the third consecutive game.

Jordan Pals, Roberto Batista and Anthony Rawson combined on a five-hit shutout as Palm Beach defeated Tampa 4-0 at home on Saturday night. Pals tossed seven scoreless innings of four-hit ball with a walk and five strikeouts for his second win since joining Palm Beach and ran his consecutive scoreless inning streak to 13 innings. Kevin Estrada and Shaun Boyd each had two hits on the night to lead the Cardinals.

On Sunday afternoon, Charlie Isaacson and Ben Julianel combined on a six-hit shutout as Tampa defeated Palm Beach 6-0 at home. Matt Lemanczyk had a two-RBI pinch-hit double in the seventh inning, while Andy Schutzenhofer was a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored.

Tuesday night's game between Palm Beach and Sarasota was postponed due to inclement weather in the Sarasota area and soggy and unplayable field conditions at Ed Smith Stadium. As part of the make-up doubleheader on Wednesday evening, Kevin Estrada provided all the Cardinals offense on the day going 2-for-6 with two RBI doubles as Palm Beach was swept by Sarasota by the scores of 3-1 and 7-1. Tyler Adamczyk threw his second complete game of the season allowing three runs on six hits in six innings, but was provided one run of support as Estrada knocked home Andy Schutzenhofer in the second inning. In the nightcap, Luis Mendoza held the Cardinals to two hits and gave up one unearned run for the win. Jared Smith lasted two innings in his first start off the disabled list. Smith allowed two runs on three hits with two walks and a strikeout.

Thursday's night game against the Sarasota Red Sox saw Jordan Pals throw his fourth consecutive gem since being called up from Peoria only to have the bullpen break down in the ninth inning and eventually lose in the 11th inning as Palm Beach dropped their fifth straight, 3-2. Pals, the incumbent Florida State League Pitcher-of-the-Week, allowed just one run on seven hits through six innings. Anthony Rawson held the Red Sox scoreless through the seventh and eighth innings before yielding to Justin Garza. Shane Wallace came on in the 11th inning in relief.Palm Beach scored both its runs in the top of the first inning. Rayner Laya tripled home Matt Leamanczyk following a lead-off single.
