Providence, RI - The 2017-18 regular season is almost complete, but the Providence Bruins already secured their sixth straight postseason berth last week. It was a busy week for the team, playing four games in six days while earning four of eight possible points. Providence is third in a loaded Atlantic Division with 91 points, and their record of 43-25-3-2 is good for not only fifth in the conference but sixth overall in the AHL.
Tuesday morning the Bruins had a close game looking to lock up a spot in the 2018 Calder Cup Playoffs, but fell to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 3-2. Friday night at the Dunk the P-Bruins defeated the Hartford Wolfpack 6-3. Providence got two goals from Ryan Fitzgerald along with goals from Jordan Szwarz, Anton Blidh, Trent Frederic and Austin Czarnik. McIntyre stopped 37 of 40 shots at net for his 24th win of the season. Saturday was another win for Providence, facing the Sound Tigers once again and earning 4-2 victory. This win was huge for the P-Bruins as it clinched a berth in the 2018 Calder Cup Playoffs. The team got goals from Czarnik, Paul Postma, Hargrove and Jeremy Lauzon, while Jordan Binnington made his 23 saves in net. With an injury depleted lineup Sunday, Providence fell to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms Sunday afternoon 6-3.
Colton Hargrove led the way in scoring this week, picking up a pair of goals and four assists for six points. Frederic had two goals and two assists for four points and, along with Hargrove, scored in each of the team's four games. Czarnik and Jack Studnicka also had four points last week with Czarnik pushing his team-leading total to 66 points on the season. With 23 goals and 43 assists, Czarnik is having a career season and was recently rewarded by being named to the AHL Second All-Star team. Studnicka, who came over from the OHL this week, made his debut in Friday's game and has scored in each of his first three pro games.
The P-Bruins have one weekend of games remaining on their regular season schedule and can finish anywhere from second to fourth in the Atlantic Division. Providence welcomes Charlotte to the Dunk Friday at 7:05pm in a match-up that could determine who avoids facing first place Lehigh Valley in the opening round of the playoffs. They conclude their road schedule in Springfield Saturday at 7:05pm and then welcome those same Thunderbirds to town Sunday at 3:05pm for their regular season finale.
