Over 46,000 Students Take in TELUS BE BRAVE
February 24, 2021 - Western Hockey League (WHL) - Calgary Hitmen News Release
Calgary, AB - The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club today hosted the TELUS BE BRAVE #EndBullying Online Event encouraging students to be kind to each other and stay safe online.
Held on Pink Shirt Day, the FREE virtual presentation was streamed on HitmenHockey.com and witnessed by 46,501 students.
TELUS Wise ambassador, Calgary Stampeders alumnus, and member of the Calgary Fire Department Randy Chevrier was the host while Singer, Songwriter, Speaker and Founder/CEO of 'No Time for That' Elsie Morden shared her powerful story of relentless school bullying while growing up.
Both speakers were presented by A1 Chesney Service Experts with special appearances from Hitmen players Luke Prokop, Riley Stotts and Jackson van de Leest.
"The Hitmen organization is so proud and honoured to have had the opportunity to reach so many kids in Calgary, across Alberta and our country on pink shirt day and deliver such an important message," said Hitmen Vice President and Alternate Governor Mike Moore. "Special thanks to TELUS, A1 Chesney Service Experts, Randy, Elsie all the teachers and schools and especially the students for making this virtual event happen. We can't wait to be back live in the Scotiabank Saddledome next year for this incredible event and initiative."
This was the fifth year in a row the Hitmen have partnered with TELUS to host BE BRAVE which is traditionally held as an #EndBullying hockey game at Scotiabank Saddledome in front of over 12,000 students. However due to COVID-19 restrictions this year's event moved online with three 50 minute presentations targeting three difference audiences in Elementary, Middle and Junior High and High School classes.
"We are thrilled that so many students joined us on Pink Shirt Day for the TELUS BE BRAVE #EndBullying Online Event and that we could share our TELUS Wise tips for how to deal with cyberbullying - whether someone is experiencing it first hand or witnessing it happen," said Nimmi Kanji, Director of TELUS Wise. "Today's youth are incredible change-makers and I'm confident that with continued dialogue around this important subject and combined efforts from youth, parents and educators, we can make the online space a friendly and safe space."
During the TELUS BE BRAVE #EndBullying Online Event students were asked to share their messages of kindness using the hashtag #TELUSBEBRAVE. All notes of kindness were posted to the TELUS BE BRAVE WALL and included the following;
* "Kindness - it costs nothing but means everything."
* "You are not alone, we are brave together."
* "Be Bold. Be Brave. Be Kind."
* "One small act of kindness can ripple into many acts of kindness."
A total of 698 classes and schools were represented online from six different provinces, some from as far away as Ontario and Quebec. Every class in attendance was entered into a draw for a Buddy Bench courtesy of TELUS and also received a complementary TELUS BE BRAVE resource package.
