Otters strike again in shootout

Jordan Skellett and Zack Torquato each scored in the shootout to lead the Erie Otters to a 4-3 win over the Guelph Storm in an Ontario Hockey League game played tonight in front of 2,773 at the Tullio Arena.

Kevin Beech turned aside 39 shots in the game as well as both Guelph shootout attempts as the Otters shaded the Storm for the second straight game in penalty shots. The Otters posted their second straight victory (and third in the last four games) to improve to 12-32-1-2 on the season.

Guelph dropped their third straight shootout decision and are now 23-15-2-7. Nick Palmieri, Stanislav Polodna and Shayne Taylor scored regulation goals for the Otters while Frank Grzeszczak collected a pair of assists. Grzeszczak also was awarded a penalty shot in overtime but was foiled by Thomas McCollum.

Matt Kennedy, Rafael Rotter and Jeff Hayes scored for the Storm, who rallied from a two-goal deficit in the third period to force overtime.

The Otters led 2-1 after one and 3-1 heading into the third.

The Storm out shot the Otters 42-28 in the game as Beech posted the victory.

The three stars of the game were 1. Beech; 2. Guelph defenseman Drew Doughty and 3. Skellett.

The Otters continue a three-game home stand Friday night at the Tullio Arena when the Brampton Battalion (18-25-1-4) visit for a 7:30 p.m. start with a select number of fans in attendance receiving a free gift courtesy of TGI Fridays.

Saturday it's the Otters and the Kitchener Rangers (31-13-1-2) at 7:30 p.m. at the Tullio Arena. Career Concepts and Time Warner present a special visit live appearance of SpongeBob SquarePants and a select number of fans will receive a free gift courtesy of Career Concepts.

Tickets for both games are on sale now at all Erie-area TicketMaster locations as well as the Civic Center Box Office.

Both games can be heard live on True Oldies 1330 and on-line at www.ottershockey.com (presented by the James H. Cross Company) beginning with the pre-game show at 7:15 p.m. Friday's game can also be seen live on the Image Sports Network at 7:30 p.m.
