One to Go: Revs Victory Wednesday Would Clinch Title

June 29, 2010 - Atlantic League (AtL)
York Revolution News Release

The York Revolution need just one win to clinch a First Half Freedom Division championship. The Revs fell to the Long Island Ducks 4-3 on Tuesday night, but with a win on Wednesday, can clinch the first half championship outright, having already lined up at the very least a tie. The Revs will look to secure the playoff berth, and pop the corks with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. at Sovereign Bank Stadium on Wednesday night in downtown York.

The Revs came up a run short in Tuesday's contest. York struck first on a first inning double steal, with Scott Grimes hustling safely home, and knocking the ball away from catcher Brendan Monaghan.

Long Island went in front in the second on a two-run homer to left-center by former Revs outfielder Matt Esquivel.

The Revs immediately drew even at 2-2 in their half of the second. Chuck Jeroloman drilled a two-out double to right-center, and scored on another hustle play, all the way from second base on Liu Rodriguez' infield hit, knocking over Monaghan to jar the ball loose.

James Shanks broke the tie with a homerun to left-center in the sixth inning, as York climbed on top 3-2.

Three walks from two different relievers led to the decisive rally in the seventh, however. With the bases loaded, Dustan Mohr ripped a single into left to tie the game, and Esquivel's seeing-eye grounder through the right side of the infield plated the go-ahead run.

Jerome Gamble (2-0) earned the win for the Ducks, allowing three runs on six hits in a season-high six innings. He struck out eight, making just his third start of the season.

Jim Heuser (0-1) suffered the loss for York, while Kane Davis recorded his 12th save, allowing just a two-out single to Rodriguez in the ninth.

Gamble, Davis, and setup man Ricardo Gomez combined to strike out 13 Revs, which matches the most strikeouts by the Revs in any game this season.

Notes: Somerset's 10-inning 6-3 loss vs. Camden lowered the Revs' magic number to one; a Somerset loss would also clinch the first half title for the Revs. Rodriguez went 3-for-4, raising his average to .297, and extending his hitting streak to 11 games; he is now batting .525 on his streak, and .468 over his last 17 games. The Revs are still tied with Southern Maryland for the league's best record at 38-27. Their division lead stands at 5.0 games with five to play. The Revs are attempting to earn the 13th playoff berth for a professional baseball team in York city's history. It would make them just the third team in league history to go from dead last, to first half champs the next year. The previous two clubs (2000 Nashua Pride, 2007 Newark Bears) went all the way to an Atlantic League championship.

Up Next: Looking to clinch the First Half division title, All-Star Jesus Sanchez (5-1, 2.39) will start Wednesday night for the Revs, opposite Ducks All-Star Randy Leek (8-4, 4.37). Gates open at 6 p.m. with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. It's a Wing Wednesday, featuring the pregame all-you-can-eat buffet in the picnic area catered by the White Rose Bar & Grill. The first round of the Pizza Hut Team Card Set will be given away. The Calder Cup awarded to the 2010 American Hockey League champion Hershey Bears will be at the stadium. The Revs will wear red jerseys sponsored by the Heart & Vascular Center at Memorial Hospital, which will be auctioned off on August 8. Tickets are available at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS, and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
