Union Omaha News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Greg Hurst's 84th-minute strike earned Union Omaha a hard-fought 1-0 victory against New England Revolution II on Wednesday night at Gillette Stadium. The result is Omaha's third consecutive shutout win to start the 2021 League One season.
A tough first half produced chances for both sides - the quantity went in Omaha's favor, but the quality in New England's. Damian Rivera of the Revolution II had the most promising opportunity of the opening 45 minutes, but his close-range effort was well-stopped by Rashid Nuhu.
With the scoreboard still blank midway through the second half, Omaha brought in offensive reinforcements in Hurst and Evan Conway. Conway forced a quality reaction save out of New England's Joe Rice in the 71st minute, and former Revs II player Nicolas Firmino flashed a shot just wide of Rice's far post seven minutes later.
But it would be Hurst who came to Omaha's rescue, as the Scottish striker scored with only six minutes remaining in normal time. Latching on to a long ball from Nuhu, Hurst cut inside and fired in an excellent shot from the edge of the area.
The goal would hold up as the match-winner, and ensure that Omaha improved to a perfect 3-0-0, on level terms in the table with Greenville Triumph SC ahead of Sunday's clash with the reigning title-winners on ESPN2 - League One's first-ever nationally-televised game.
New England is also back in action on Sunday night, when it hosts Chattanooga Red Wolves SC as part of a doubleheader for home fans which also features the club's first team in Major League Soccer.
