Inland Empire 66ers News Release

Lancaster, CA- Even with one of the best pitchers in the California League on the mound for Inland Empire, it was the offense that took control of the game Friday night.

Eric Oliver and Matt Long both homered at Clear Channel Stadium in Lancaster, leading the 66ers (53-57) to a wild 8-6 win over the JetHawks (42-61) in front of more than 3,000 fans.

Ariel Pena started for the Sixers, cruising through the first five innings, allowing only one run on one hit. With the 66ers ahead 2-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, runs appeared to be at a premium.

It didn't take long for that to change when the first three batters reached base for Lancaster. Two batters later, Adam Bailey crushed his fifth homerun of the season, a grand slam, to push the JetHawks past the 66ers 5-2.

After a scoreless seventh, Inland Empire tacked on two runs in the eighth and Lancaster quickly followed with a run of their own.

With the score at 6-4, the Sixers needed a dramatic ninth inning to try and gain ground on the Lake Elsinore Storm and Rancho Cucamonga Quakes - who had both already lost - in the Cal League South Division.

Jon Karcich doubled, Steven Irvine walked and Dwayne Bailey was hit by a pitch, quickly loading the bases with no outs in the top of the ninth.

Long drove in another run with a sacrifice fly, and Kole Calhoun followed with a base hit to load the bases one more time. In the next at-bat, Oliver drove a pitch from Pat Urckfitz, doubling in all three runners and pushing the 66ers ahead 8-6, sealing a victory for Inland Empire.

The 66ers return to Lancaster Saturday night for the final game of a four-game series. Inland Empire will be back at Arrowhead Credit Union Park on Sunday evening at 6:05 for Family FUNday Sunday and an Angels Logo Banner Giveaway to fans that enter the stadium.
