NWHL Top Scorer Jonna Curtis Is the VEDA Player of the Week

October 22, 2018 - Premier Hockey Federation (PHF) News Release

Prior to this season, Whitecaps forward Jonna Curtis said her goal was to be "a player everyone can depend on - from giving 100 percent every shift to supporting my teammates when I am on the bench. I'm going to get to play with so many great players and I'm excited to see how we all blend together to create a winning team."

Just four games in, we know how that's worked out. Minnesota is 4-0, and for her outstanding play on Saturday and Sunday in her team's wins over the Riveters, Curtis has been named the VEDA NWHL Player of the Week.

Curtis, who led the University of New Hampshire in scoring in her junior and senior seasons, had a goal and an assist in the Whitecaps' win on Saturday, and a shorthanded goal and two assists in the club's victory on Sunday. She now leads the NWHL in scoring with 3-4-7 in 7 games.

"I'm lucky enough to get the best of both worlds - being a part of the NWHL and in my home state of Minnesota," said Curtis, who is from Elk River, Minn. "It's great having my family, and especially my niece and nephews, watch me play. I hope it will instill in them, as with all younger girls, to dream big because you never know where your hard work will take you."

At UNH between 2013-2017, Curtis scored 54 goals and added 52 assists for 106 points over 122 games. She was a team-best 21-21-42 in 35 games as a senior and 16-17-33 in 36 games as a junior. A 2012 graduate of Elk River High School, Curtis set a school record with 280 points on 156 goals and 124 assists. She is also a former member of the Minnesota Junior Whitecaps U-19 team.

The Whitecaps return to action this weekend with a pair of game at TRIA Rink in Saint Paul against the equally talented and deep Buffalo Beauts. Tickets are available at NWHL.zone/tickets, but they are moving fast, so get yours early this week before you miss out.

Stay tuned each Monday for the announcement of the VEDA NWHL Player of the Week.
