Modesto Nuts News Release
Lake Elsinore, CA. - Despite 12 hits and a big leaguer on the mound, the Nuts lost 3-1 against the Storm on Saturday night at The Diamond.
Jhoulys Chacin (L, 0-2), working his way back to the Rockies rotation after a shoulder injury, made his second rehab start with the Modesto Nuts (4-13). He tossed 4.2 innings, allowed five hits and struck out two while walking one. The righty allowed just one run-scoring hit which was a three-run blast to Hunter Renfroe.
That turned out to be all that the Storm (9-8) would need as their pitching staff worked out of jam after jam. The Nuts put runners on in all but one inning and went 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position. In the three-game series, the Nuts went 3-for-26 with runners in scoring position. The lone run for the Nuts scored on Matt Wessinger's RBI single in the fifth.
Righty Zach Eflin (W, 3-1) tossed 5.2 innings. The Padres former first-round pick allowed eight hits but just the one run while striking out four and walking none.
Storm closer Trevor Gott (S, 5) struck out Trevor Story in the eighth inning with the tying runs on base. The righty finished off the four-out save by striking out a pair in the ninth.
After the first off day of the season on Sunday, the Nuts return to John Thurman Field on Monday night to open a four-game series against the Bakersfield Blaze. First pitch on Monday night is at 7:05 p.m. with righty Andrew Brown on the mound for the Nuts. RHP Mike Dennahrdt will toss for the Blaze.
