No-Hitter Highlights Legends' Doubleheader Sweep of Drive

July 2, 2013 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release

Fans in Lexington on Tuesday night got to witness baseball history, as Lexington Legends (8-5, 41-40) starter Daniel Stumpf threw a seven-inning no-hitter in a 1-0 victory over the Greenville Drive (7-6, 29-53) in the first game of a doubleheader. The Legends finished the double dip with an offensive outburst against the Drive bullpen in a 7-1 win.

Stumpf (6-6) was the story on this night, as he held the Drive hitless while only facing two batters over the minimum. He allowed one walk, with the second Drive runner reaching on an error, and struck out three.

Raul Mondesi provided the only offense of game one, as he drove a solo homer to right against Drive starter Francellis Montas (1-7) in the bottom of the first.

The no-hitter spoiled a terrific outing by Montas, who threw all six innings for the Drive. He gave up six hits and four walks while punching out six.

Mondesi and Michael Antonio each collected two hits for Lexington in game one.

The nightcap featured a little more offense, but most of it came from the Legends.

The Drive scored their only run of the doubleheader in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead against Legends starter Christian Binford (5-3). Aneury Tavarez dropped down a bunt single to begin the frame, and he promptly stole second. After a groundout, Keaton Briscoe singled up the middle to score the run.

Binford settled in after that to pick up the victory. He gave up five hits, the one run and one walk in five innings while striking out six.

Bubba Starling gave the Legends the lead for good in the bottom of the third, as his two-run double to center against Drive starter Yunior Ortega (2-3) scored Mondesi and Mark Donato.

The Legends rudely greeted Drive reliever Raynel Velette with five more runs in the fourth. Fred Ford led off with a triple and quickly scored on a wild pitch. Mark Threlkeld drew a bases loaded walk later in the inning, and another wild pitch by Velette scored a third run. Starling added another single to plate a run, and an error by Jose Vinicio extended the lead to the eventual final.

Starling had two hits and three RBIs to lead the Lexington offense in the second game. Ford, Mondesi and Terrance Gore added two hits apiece. Tavarez collected a pair of hits for Greenville.

The series wraps up in Lexington at 7:05 on Wednesday. The Drive will hope to avoid the series sweep with LHP Cody Kukuk (4-7, 4.27) on the mound, while LHP Crawford Simmons (0-1, 6.46) takes the ball for the Legends.
