Nick Mellen 2020 MLL Draft Prospect
April 28, 2020 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release
Boston, MA - In Major League Lacrosse history only one defender has ever been selected #1 overall in the Collegiate Draft; in the very first MLL draft in 2001 the Rochester Rattlers selected a defender from Princeton, Ryan Mollet. Twenty years later, will Nick Mellen be the second defender selected #1 overall?
Nick Mellen is a seasoned veteran that has been noted by Syracuse Head Coach, John Desko, as being able to take the top attackman from opposing teams, out of the game. He has been one of the most prolific contributors on the defensive end for the Orange over the last five years. If he had earned a third USILA All-American selection this year he would have been just the ninth defenseman in Syracuse program history to be a three-time All-American.
The New York Lizards have the first overall pick. Currently they have All-Star Ben Randall leading their defense with Jack Carrigan and Alex Spring. Their most pressing needs are likely on the attacking end, but if they want to lock up the top defensive talent in the country, they will have to take him early.
Will we see Mellen become the newest member of the Lizards? To find out, follow the results of the 2020 MLL Collegiate Draft Presented by Cascade on MLL's social media platforms, May 4 at 7:30pm EST.

Experience & Talent -When Syracuse Head Coach, John Desko, was asked about Mellen moving on from Syracuse he stated, "You've got somebody that's been your top cover guy for a number of years now, and that was always a comforting thing that Nick at most times could go out and take the other teams best attackmen out of the game."
Injury - Mellen redshirted the 2017 due to injury. He then sat the final four games of the Orange's season this year due to injury.
