New York Handled by Dallas, 97-87
White Plains, NY - The visiting Dallas Wings never trailed as they bested the New York Liberty, 97-87, at the Westchester County Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Liberty (5-14) overcame a 14-point second half deficit in the last matchup between the two teams, but there was no such comeback in this one. A Tina Charles basket brought New York within 11 with just over nine minutes to play, but the Wings' (10-8) lead ballooned back to 20 by the five-minute mark.
Head coach Katie Smith commented on what she needs from the team moving forward. "I think there's a lot of basketball to be played. The effort has to come from within, each individual person, myself included and we need to put it all out there. If we come locked in both mentally and physically, I think we can feel good about ourselves."
Charles got off to a strong start for the Liberty, scoring 12 points in the first quarter and 17 in the half. She finished the contest with 26 points and nine rebounds, her ninth game this season clearing the 20-point benchmark.
Amanda Zahui B and Epiphanny Prince joined Charles in double figures, notching 12 and 11 points, respectively. In total, 10 Liberty players entered the scoring column, and the bench contributed 39 points.
The Wings' 97-point output was the second highest of the season by a Liberty opponent, trailing just the 103 scored by the Sky (6/29). They made their living at the charity stripe, hitting 26 of their 32 attempts, while New York left nine points at the line, making 19 of 28.
Despite the loss, point guard Bria Hartley remained optimistic. "Everything we do, we have to do hard. These games are really tough, so we have to find a way to come together and get a win. Once we figure it out, I think we'll be a tough team to beat."
The loss was the Liberty's eighth in the past nine games, and they are just 1-9 against Western Conference foes this season. They stay in the tri-state when the face the Connecticut Sun on the road on Wednesday. The matinee matchup is set to begin at 11:30 a.m. (ET) at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
