New Mexico United Announces Return of Albuquerque-Native Sergio Rivas
November 7, 2022 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
New Mexico United News Release
New Mexico United is excited to announce that midfielder Sergio Rivas will return to the club for the 2023 USL Championship season. 2023 will be Rivas' third year in the Black & Yellow. In that time, he has scored seven goals, and assisted four more. Rivas made 24 appearances in 2022, starting 16 matches and playing more than 1,400 minutes.
Rivas grew up in Albuquerque, and attended Cibola High School. He previously signed a two-year contract extension with United, which was announced on Christmas Day of 2021. That extension keeps him with the club through at least the end of the 2023 season.
Rivas was drafted 26th overall by the San Jose Earthquakes in the 2019 MLS Superdraft. Prior to his professional career, Rivas was named to the all-WAC first teams in 2016 and 2018, as well as the all-WAC tournament team in 2018 and 2015, while attending Seattle University. Rivas' accolades stretch back across his career, into his time at Cibola High School in Albuquerque, when he was named the 2014 New Mexico Boys Soccer Gatorade Player of the Year.
