Mississippi Braves News Release
GREENVILLE _ Bubba Nelson held Mobile to three singles over eight innings and James Jurries delivered two extra-base hits Sunday, leading the Greenville Braves to a 6-3 Southern League victory over the BayBears at Municipal Stadium.
Nelson (3-1), a 21-year-old right-hander who pitched six scoreless innings against Mobile April 12, allowed only one runner past second base as the G-Braves (14-14) gained a split in the four-game series. The Maryland native did not walk a batter, struck out four, and left the game with a 6-1 lead.
Greenville pitchers yielded only six hits and one walk in the last two games of the series. The G-Braves broke the game open in the sixth, scoring three runs on two-out hits by Kelly Johnson, Adam LaRoche, and Jason Fitzgerald. The rally came against Mobile starter Roger Deago (3-1), who had not allowed more than three runs in any of his first five starts.
Johnson knocked in another run in the seventh. Jurries' first home run of the season, a hard line drive over the right-field wall, gave the G-Braves a 2-0 lead in the third inning.
The BayBears cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth, when Rich Gomez led off with a bloop single and raced from first to third on an infield out. He scored on another infield out by Ben Johnson.
Greenville begins a 4-game series Tuesday in Sevierville, Tenn., against the Tennessee Smokies. They will return home May 15 to begin a 4-game series against the Jacksonville Suns.
