Myrtle Beach Pelicans: Alamo Named Carolina League Player of the Week
ALAMO NAMED CAROLINA LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
CATCHER/FIRST BASEMAN BECOMES FIRST BIRDS POSITION PLAYER IN 2017 TO TAKE WEEKLY HONOR
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Myrtle Beach Pelicans catcher/first baseman Tyler Alamo has been named the Carolina League Player of the Week for August 14-20, the league office announced Monday. Alamo is the first position player on the Pelicans' roster to collect a weekly award this season. A 24th-round pick in 2013 by the Chicago Cubs out of Cypress High School (Calif.), Alamo went a combined 11-for-28 in eight games, slashing .393/.469/.786 with two doubles, three home runs, eight RBIs, eight runs scored and three walks. Alamo recorded three multi-hit games and three multi-RBI contests during the week. The Orange, Calif., native blasted three home runs in Saturday's doubleheader at Wilmington. He registered his second career multi-homer contest in the twin bill opener before smashing the game- winning shot in the finale. With that effort, Alamo became the first Pelican to hit three long balls in one day since Joey Gallo went yard three times on May 16, 2014 against Potomac. Alamo joined Ryan Strausborger, who later played in the major leagues with the Texas Rangers, as the only Birds in recorded club history (through the 2005 season) to pop three dingers over a doubleheader. Alamo is the first Myrtle Beach hitter since at least the 2005 campaign to smash three home runs on the road in one day of baseball. In 103 games this season, Alamo is hitting .282/.326/.433 with 22 doubles, a career-high 12 home runs and 40 RBIs. In a 24-game span since July 27, he is a combined 29-for-84, posting a .345/.389/.524 line with six doubles, three homers, 11 RBIs and five walks. Thanks to this hot streak, he has vaulted into ninth in the circuit in batting average. Following Monday's off day, the Pelicans begin a six-game homestand with Tuesday's 7:05 p.m.
contest against the Down East Wood Ducks from TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark.
Tuesday's contest is a Craft Beer Tuesday, meaning $2 craft draughts from 6-8 p.m. Tickets are available online at www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Tickets and also by calling the Pelicans' Box Office at (843) 918-6000. The 2017 season is the 19th season for the Pelicans franchise and third as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs.
