Musketeers Shut Down the Stars
Sioux City, IA-Friday morning Sioux City was digging out of ten inches of snow to prepare for the Lincoln Stars who sit in fifth place 3 points out of a playoff spot. With Friday night's win, Sioux City continues to remain atop of the USHL by one point. Making it 5-games in a row, beating the Stars 2-0.
In a scoreless first period, both teams didn't find their rhythm at puck drop with the Muskies only getting four shots and the Stars with eight shots. The passing wasn't crisp; the shot attempts didn't find their way past the diving defenders.
It wasn't until the final minutes of the 2nd period when Keegan Mantaro with his 5th assist broke up the offensive rush by Lincoln, moving the puck ahead to Connor Ford, his 7th assist, finding Eeli Tolvanen just at center ice. Tolvanen walked in and took the shot just at the top of the circle, finding a seam to beat Stars goalie Josef Korenar. That's Eeli's 21st goal and 38th point of the season, tracking down 5 points (4g, 1a) in the past three games.
Musketeers extended their lead at the 14:20 mark of the 3rd period by getting a power play goal from Phillip Knies his 15th goal of the season. He picked the puck up from a shot that ricocheted by Charlie Kelleher, giving Charlie his 27th assist, also assisting on the play was Odeen Tufto which is his 23rd assist of the season.
Matiss Kivlenieks is now tied with former goaltender John Kuhn for the most wins by a goalie in a season, with 27 wins on the season. Matiss made 17 saves on the night and didn't go quietly when he earned 15 minutes of penalties after being knocked around in the crease by Lincoln in the final minute of play. He wasn't the only Musky in the scrum, joining his defense was Anea Ferrario, Connor Ford and JC MacLean. Those penalties cause Matiss from missing his 4th shutout of the season. Todd Scott would face one shot in the final 15 seconds of the game.
Musketeers hit the road to Kearney, NE where they will take on the Storm for their final match-up of the season. The team will stay on the road for the next two weekends before returning to the Tyson Events Center, on March 17th for the St. Patrick's Green Out and then March 18th for the Siouxland Humane Society Lap Dog Races.
