Vermont Mountaineers News Release
Montpelier, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers dropped their home opener, 4-3, to the Valley Blue Sox in New England Collegiate Baseball League action on Saturday night. With the loss, the Mountaineers fall to 1-1 on the summer.
The game was tied 3-3 in the ninth when Valley jumped ahead. Blue Sox second baseman Joe Carcone (St. Rose) sparked the offense with a one out single. Carcone proceeded to steal second during catcher Justin Morhardt's (Bryan) at bat. After Morhardt struck out for the second out of the inning, shortstop Garrett Black (Ohio) walked, and the ball got passed Mountaineers catcher Trey West (Le Moyne). Carcone attempted to nab third on the play, and West's throw to third sailed into left field, allowing Carcone to score the go-ahead run and Black to advance to second. That is the cushion the Blue Sox would need as they held the Mountaineers bats scoreless in the home half of the ninth.
Valley leapt out to a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Mountaineers came back to tie it in the third. Chandler Brock (Alabama-Huntsville) drew a one out walk and proceeded to steal second during left fielder Jack Parenty's (Stony Brook) at bat. The next batter, Adam Picard (UMass) hit a ground ball to third that went through the legs of Frank Crinella (Merrimack). Brock scored from second to tie the game.
After the Blue Sox pushed across two runs in the top of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead, the Mountaineers answered with two runs of their own in the fifth. Second baseman Brett Charbonneau (Le Moyne) hit a one out single to right field and stole second during Chandler Brock's at bat. Brock then walked. Two batters later, Adam Picard hit an RBI single to score Charbonneau from second and move Brock to third. Brock later scored during Ben Hall's (Alabama-Huntsville) at bat on a wild pitch by Valley starter Anthony Elia (Seton Hall).
Jim McDade (Millersville) started the game for Vermont and pitched four innings. He allowed three earned runs on four hits. McDade struck out four and walked one. Anthony Elia started for Valley and threw four and two-thirds innings. He allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks. He struck out seven.
Kyle Rasmussen (West Hills) got the win (1-0) in two and one-third innings of relief. He gave up no runs and no walks. He struck out one. Sam Spencer (Castleton) took the loss (0-1), but pitched very well. Spencer threw five innings and allowed one unearned run on four hits and a walk. He struck out three. Joe DiBenedetto (Seton Hall) earned the save by pitching a scoreless ninth inning. He allowed just one hit and struck out two.
The Vermont Mountaineers return to action on Monday night when they travel to Sanford to take on the Mainers at 6:30. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
