Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY - Biscuits starter Jim Magrane hurled six innings of shutout baseball and Michael Coleman broke a scoreless tie with a two-run homer as host Montgomery (2-1) whitewashed the Tennesse Smokies (1-2), 4-0.
All of the Biscuits' runs, including Coleman's roundtripper off of Smokies starter Steven Jackson, were scored with two outs.
Magrane and Jackson matched zeroes until the bottom of the fifth inning. An Elliot Johnson leadoff single was followed by groundouts by Jason Pridie and Wes Bankston. Coleman then laced the first delivery from Jackson deep over the left field wall for his first home run in a Biscuits' uniform.
Montgomery tallied solo insurance runs against the Tennessee bullpen in the sixth and seventh innings, thanks to two-out RBI singles from Jeremy Owens and Ryan Christianson respectively.
In the meanwhile, Jim Magrane and relievers Brian Henderson and Jose Rodriguez continued Montgomery's mastery over the Smokies' lineup that had begun the night before. Including Friday's 4-2 Biscuits' victory, Tennessee has not scored in 15 consecutive innings.
Magrane (1-0) picks up the victory, striking out four and walking one over his six innings of work. Jackson (0-1) takes the loss, walking three and fanning six to go with his two runs allowed in five innings.
The Smokies and the Biscuits play the fourth game of the five-game series on Sunday at 2:05. Montgomery sends young lefty Chuck Tiffany to the hill to oppose Tennessee righthander Russ Ohlendorf.
