MLL Joins 'Rally the Vote' Voter Registration Coalition

September 15, 2020 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release

Boston, MA - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) announced today that they have joined the Sacramento Kings-led 'Rally the Vote,' coalition. Major League Lacrosse joins teams from across the NBA, NFL, MLB, MLS, WNBA and NWSL.

"Major League Lacrosse teams understand investment, dedication and growth of communities. For twenty years we have worked hand-in-hand with the communities we serve. The development and growth of the community begins at the ballot-box with each individual exercising their right to vote for representatives who reflect their values and vision for their community," said Alexander (Sandy) Brown. "We are thrilled to be joining with the Sacramento Kings and teams and leagues from across professional sports to Rally the Vote. We look forward to using our platform to raise awareness about registration, deadlines, resources and more in the upcoming weeks."

Rally the Vote aims to increase the amount of new registrations and ensure all of those who register to vote cast a ballot in November. As reported by the Sacramento Kings, according to the most recent Census data, at least 88 million eligible Americans, or one-fifth of eligible voters, are not registered to vote and of those registered to vote, only 53 percent voted in the 2018 elections. In 2016, 100 million eligible voters in the country did not vote and over 60 percent of adult citizens said they had never been asked to register to vote. To help address the registration gap, Rally the Vote has been designed to leverage professional sports team digital platforms to reach out directly to fans to promote nonpartisan voter registration and encourage participation in elections.

"The Sacramento Kings and Rally the Vote are grateful to have Major League Lacrosse encouraging fans to register to vote and participate in the upcoming elections," said Matina Kolokotronis, Chief Operating Officer for the Sacramento Kings. "We believe that sports teams have a unique responsibility to use our platforms for positive change, and we're excited to Rally the Vote alongside this incredible coalition of teams and leagues."

Major League Lacrosse and its teams will participate in eleven Rally the Vote promotional days to encourage voter registration, the request for mail-in ballots, and voting on November 3. Major League Lacrosse will be hosting a digital educational session for MLL stakeholders with RISE. RISE seeks to equip professional sports organizations with the tools and knowledge to get involved, make a difference and inspire their fans to be civically active. Major League Lacrosse players, such as Chad Toliver (Philadelphia Barrage) and Isaiah Davis-Allen (Chesapeake Bayhawks) will serve as ambassadors. They will receive weekly information, news, upcoming opportunities, and social media toolkits from 'When We All Vote,' a non-profit, nonpartisan organization launched by Michelle Obama, Tom Hanks, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Janelle Monae, Chris Paul, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw that is on a mission to increase participation in every election and close the race and age voting gap by changing the culture around voting.
