Missions Rally Falls Short in the 9th, Lose to Corpus 6-3ÃÂ

SAN ANTONIO - After trailing 3-0 early on, the Missions two comebacks throughout the second half of the game. However, both comeback attempts fell short as they drop the opening game of the series to Corpus Christi.
After two scoreless innings, the Corpus Christi Hooks used timely hitting to take a lead on the Missions. Facing Pedro Avila, the Hooks plated three runs on four hits. Ross Adolph and Corey Julks both reached on singles to start the inning. Korey Lee scored the first run with an RBI double. David Hensley followed that up with a two-run double down the right field line. Corpus Christi took a 3-0 lead after three innings of play.
The Missions were held scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out in the inning, Juan Fernandez hit his sixth double of the season. Kelvin Melean drove him in with his second double of the season. Later in the inning, Melean was caught in a rundown between third and home and tagged out to end the inning.
After trailing 3-1 heading into the seventh inning, the Missions bullpen struggled to keep the game close. Facing Henry Henry, the Hooks added two more runs in the seventh inning. After loading the bases, Scott Manea drove in a run with a bases loaded walk. The second run scored after a Matthew Barefoot groundout.
In the eighth inning, the Hooks plated another insurance run on a sacrifice fly. The Missions trailed 6-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Missions offense started a comeback attempt in the bottom of the ninth inning. San Antonio loaded the bases after singles from Kyle Overstreet, Allen Cordoba, and Juan Fernandez. Melean drove in two more runs with an RBI single to right field. With the tying run at the plate, Eguy Rosario struck out swinging to end the game.

The Missions continue their six-game series with Corpus Christi on Wednesday, August 4th. Left-hander Osvaldo Hernandez (3-6, 4.37) is scheduled to start for the Missions. Right-hander Brandon Lawson (0-4, 3.42) is the scheduled starter for the Hooks. First pitch from Nelson Wolff Stadium will be at 7:05 p.m.
