Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
ST. LUCIE, FL (May 9, 2006) - One moment the Fort Myers Miracle were jumping up and down gaining all the momentum from a late home run. The next moment they were hanging their heads in disbelief as the St. Lucie Mets crushed three homers in an inning as the Miracle lost 13-7 on Tuesday night at Tradition Field.
The Miracle trailed 6-3 in the eighth inning and were 0-9 this season when trailing after seven. The Mets had Matt Lindstrom on the hill, who had topped out at 100 miles per hour this season, but that didn't faze the Miracle top three hitters. Alexi Casilla led off with a walk, Matt Tolbert reached on an infield single and then Garrett Guzman ripped a 0-1 pitch over the right field wall to tie the game at six. It was Guzman's third homer of the season. He finished the night 2-4, with a homer, five RBI and a run scored.
As high as the Miracle, who fell to 18-14, felt after the tying homer in the top of the inning is as low as they felt in the bottom of the eighth inning. Josh Hill, in his second inning of relief, gave up a solo homer to Jesus Flores to begin the inning, his fourth of the season. After an infield single by Alhaji Turay, Josh Peterson ripped a two run homer over the left field wall, his first of the season to make it 9-6. The Mets were just getting started. Corey Coles struck out, but reached on the dropped third strike. Coles stoles second and went to third on Anderson Hernandez' grounded out. Jose Coronado ripped a grounder to Casilla at short with the infield drawn in. Casilla couldn't field it cleanly and Coronado reached with an infield single while Coles scored to make it 10-6. Chris Schutt relieved Hill, but he didn't fare much better. He walked Ambiorix Concepcion and then gave up a three run blast to Mike Carp, his fifth of the season to end the scoring. Hill went 1.1 innings allowing five runs on four hits while Schutt went 0.2 innings allowing two runs on one hit.
The game went back and forth at the beginning with the Miracle taking a 1-0 lead in the second. With the bases loaded and one out Johnny Woodard hit a long fly ball to right that Caleb Stewart caught with his back right up against the wall. Kyle Geiger scored from first to make it 1-0.
The Mets got two in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by Bowman and an RBI ground out by Flores.
The Miracle tied it in the third when Casilla singled to left, stole second, went to third on Matt Tolbert's ground out and scored on a sac fly by Guzman. Casilla finished the night 2-4 with two runs scored and extended his hitting streak to eight games.
The Mets took the lead with a run in the third on a sac fly by Concepcion and two in the fourth on a two out, two run single by Coles to make it 5-2 Mets.
The Miracle made it 5-3 on a solo homer by Woodard in the fifth, his second of the season, but they gave the run back in the sixth on a two out RBI single by Coles. All of those runs were just the prelude to the eighth inning.
The Miracle return home for a four game series against the Daytona Cubs at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday. The Miracle send RHP Kevin Slowey (1-1, 1.53) to the hill against Cubs RHP Matt Holloman (1-2, 4.55)
