Miracle Drop 3-1 Decision at St. Lucie

July 4, 2016 - Florida State League (FSL) - Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

(PORT ST. LUCIE, FL) July 4, 2016 - The St. Lucie Mets broke a 1-1 tie by scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the Fort Myers Miracle by a score of 3-1 on Monday night at Tradition Field. With the loss, the Miracle saw their six-game winning streak come to an end.

The contest featured a scoreless pitching duel between the Miracle's Fernando Romero and the Mets' P.J. Conlon for the first three-and-one-half innings. St. Lucie was finally able to break through off Romero in the fourth, however, as Kevin Taylor led off with a single to center, and then scored on Tomas Nido's line drive triple to right-center field.

The Miracle, who had left two runners on base in each of the fifth and sixth innings, were finally able to even up the score in the seventh. Joe Maloney started the inning by lining a double down the left field line, and he then went to third on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Tanner Witt. One out later, Luis Martinez rolled a ground ball up the middle that Mets' second baseman Vinny Siera had no chance to make a play on, scoring Maloney to tie the score at 1-1.

St. Lucie responded quickly, however, by scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead for good off of Miracle reliever Michael Theofanopoulos. Tucker Tharp ripped a single off of Miracle third baseman T.J. White to start the rally, and that was followed by successive fly ball RBI doubles to left field by Jhoan Urena and Champ Stuart to give the Mets a 3-1 advantage.

The Miracle did load the bases in the top of the ninth inning, but Mets' closer Corey Taylor struck out A.J. Murray to end the game and earn his 12th save.

Conlon (2-0) earned the victory for St. Lucie by tossing seven strong innings, allowing six hits and one run while walking just one and striking out eight. Theofanopoulos (0-1) suffered the loss for Fort Myers. Romero pitched well in his start for the Miracle as he allowed five hits in his six innings of work, giving up just one run while walking three and striking out seven.

The Miracle (42-38, 8-3) and the Mets (41-37, 6-5) will meet again at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday in Port St. Lucie in the second game of this three-game series. Felix Jorge (8-3) is the probable starter for the Miracle, and he will be opposed by St. Lucie's Chris Flexen (5-7). The game will not be broadcast on www.miraclebaseball.com, but fans can listen to the St. Lucie Mets Broadcast Network and the 'Voice of the Mets' Adam MacDonald.
