Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
MARION, IL-The Traverse City Beach Bums watched a pair of three-run leads slip away as they lost the first game of a three-game series to the Southern Illinois Miners at Rent One Park on Friday by a score of 8-6.
The Beach Bums jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a three-run home run from third baseman Jeff Flagg in the first inning, his eighth home run of the season. After the Miners scored single runs in the first and second innings, the Beach Bums added a pair of runs of their own thanks to solo home runs from left fielder J.T Hall, his eighteenth of the season, and by right fielder Matt Brown, who launched his first home run of 2011 in the frame as well. The home runs gave the Beach Bums a 5-2 lead.
The Miners struck for three runs in the fourth inning against Bums starting pitcher David Nathanson to tie the game at five, then took a 6-5 lead on a solo home run from right fielder Matt Fields. In the sixth, Flagg drilled his second home run of the contest to left-center field to tie the game at six. In the seventh, the Miners scored a pair of runs on a two-out single from third baseman Nate Hall, giving Southern Illinois the 8-6 lead they would not relinquish.
Beach Bums relief pitcher Rick Raraigh (0-2) suffered the loss by allowing a pair of runs in 1.2 innings of relief, while Miners pitcher Ryan Zink (5-5) earned his fifth win with 4.2 innings of relief on the mound. Southern Illinois reliever Clayton Dill pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his sixth save of the season.
With the loss, the Beach Bums record falls to 40-36, while Southern Illinois improves to 47-28 on the season. The two home runs hit by Flagg was the third time a Beach Bums player hit two home runs in the same game. Hall and infielder Chase Burch are the others who accomplished the feat.
The Beach Bums-Miners series continues with game two of this three-game series Saturday night at 8:05 p.m. Right hander Matt Smith starts for the Beach Bums against Southern Illinois righty David Harden.
