Marion - The Southern Illinois Miners today reached contact agreements with two new players. Chris Tierney and Charlie Hahn became the tenth and eleventh players signed by the new team for their inaugural season which begins next May.
Tierney, a 6'6, 250 lb starting pitcher was originally drafted in the 7th round of the 2001 First Year Major League Player draft by Kansas City. Miners manager Mike Pinto was the recommending scout that pushed the Royals to draft Chris.
In 6 professional seasons, the Lockport, IL native carries a 4.44 era. Tierney played part of the 2006 season with the Sussex Skyhawks of the Can-Am League. In 5 starts, he was 1-2 with a 3.06 era. He struck out 15, walked 9 and opposing hitters hit .194 against him. In three of Tierney's professional seasons, he has exceeded 125 innings or more.
I have known Chris for some time and I know the kind of dominant pitcher he can be. He is a big experienced lefty who throws hard and is still young enough to flourish here in Southern Illinois and move back to a Major League organization." " added Pinto.
Hahn played his college baseball at the University of Illinois Chicago. In two seasons he was 6-6 and carried a 4.38 era. After his collegiate career, Hahn pitched in relief during parts of the last two seasons with Schaumburg and Calgary of the Northern League as well as Windy City of the Frontier League. Because of his limited innings, he retains a rookie status for the 07 season.
Hahn's professional career highlight came on the final day of the 2006 season. Signed as for the final day of the season to start for Schaumburg against the Joliet JackHammers, Hahn held the powerful Joliet lineup to 2 hits and 1 run over 7 innings, generating 17 of 23 ground ball outs. Had Joliet won, it would have given them a place in the 06 playoffs.
"I have had the chance to see Charlie pitch since scouting him in HS. I also was in attendance in Joliet for his last game of the season and was extremely impressed with his performance. That performance won him a chance to win a spot with the Miners this season" stated Pinto.
