Miguel Cabrera Highlights Former Mudcats in MLB All-Star Game

July 10, 2013 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Carolina Mudcats News Release

Zebulon, N.C. - Three former Carolina Mudcats were named to the annual Mid-Summer Classic at Citi Field in New York, N.Y. late last week. Miguel Cabrera will represent the Detroit Tigers for the American League while Travis Wood and Aroldis Chapman will suit up for the National League.

Cabrera, a member of the 2003 Southern League champions, is in the midst of another stellar campaign for the defending AL champions. The Maracay, VE, native leads the AL with a .363 batting average and 92 RBI. His 29 home runs rank second behind Baltimore's Chris Davis (33). The 2012 Triple Crown winner hit .365 in 69 games with the Mudcats while the club was the Double-A affiliate of the then-Florida Marlins. Carolina honored their former infielder with a bobblehead likeness earlier this season.

Travis Wood spent 2009 in Zebulon, N.C. as a member of the Cincinnati Reds' Double-A club. The left-hander compiled a 9-3 record over 19 starts, and posted an impressive 1.21 ERA. Wood has spent parts of four seasons in the Big Leagues between the Reds and Chicago Cubs. Wood was traded to Chicago for Shawn Marshall in 2011. This season, the Little Rock, Ark., native has a 6-6 record with the Cubs. His 2.69 ERA ranks in the top 10 for the National League. He owns 85 strikeouts in 117.0 innings.

Aroldis Chapman lit up radar guns at Five County Stadium in 2011 for the Reds' Double-A affiliate. The southpaw made five appearances, including two starts. He posted a 1-1 record for the Mudcats with 11 strikeouts over 7.1 innings. Chapman has been used as the Reds' primary closer for the past couple of seasons. The Cuban born flamethrower is 3-3 in 39 appearances for Cincinnati with 20 saves and a 2.50 ERA.

The MLB All-Star rosters are set using a combination of fan vote, player ballots and managers' selections. The game will take place at Citi Field on Tuesday, July 16th at 8:00 p.m. ET. Carolina's current shortstop, Francisco Lindor, represent the Mudcats and Cleveland Indians in the Sirius/XM Futures All-Star game on Sunday, July 14th, at 2:00 p.m. ET.

The Mudcats return home to host the Winston-Salem Dash for the first of four games on Wednesday, July 17th. Tickets are available by calling (919) 269-2287 or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
