Mighty Ducks 25th Anniversary Celebration this Weekend
GENEVA, ILLINOIS - The quack attack is back, Jack! This weekend, the Chicago Steel (not formerly known as District 5) return to Fox Valley Ice Arena for a pair of exciting home games against those cake eaters, the Green Bay Gamblers, including a 25th Anniversary Celebration of the hit movie, The Mighty Ducks, on Saturday night. Knucklepuck drop on Friday, Nov. 3, and Saturday, Nov. 4, will take place at 7:05 p.m., and the first 500 fans in attendance each night will receive a 2017-2018 Chicago Steel Magnet Schedule courtesy of 670 The Score.
"Captain Steel" Derek Daschke has led the team in passing eggs in practice to prepare for this weekend's games, while Jack Dugan has been working on his triple deke. The "Bash Brothers", Xan Gurney and John Spetz, are ready to battle the Hawks....er...Gamblers in a classic Chicago/Green Bay sports showdown. Equipment Manager Parker "Hans" Hoffman has the skates sharpened and Head Coach Mark Abalan has taught the 6-1-0-0 (12 pts., 1st Place, Eastern Conference) Steel how to fly.
Tickets start at just $10 when purchased in advance and parking is always free at Fox Valley Ice Arena. Fun activities will take place throughout the weekend, including Steel favorites like Human Slingshot Bowling, Musical Tires and the Budweiser Shootout, as well as Mighty Ducks themed contests on Saturday such as a Mighty Ducks Relay Race, Finish the Movie Quote and Movie Trivia. Additionally, two Steel players will sign post-game autographs in the lobby each night.
The Mighty Ducks, a hit 1992 Disney hockey comedy movie, follows the journey of a Minnesota pee wee team coached by Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez) from beginner status to (spoiler alert) the state championship game. The success of the movie not only spawned two sequels - D2: The Mighty Ducks (1994) and D3: The Mighty Ducks (1996) - but also paved the way for the 1993 creation of the NHL's Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. This past June, the Anaheim Ducks, as they are now known, drafted Jack Badini, who led the Chicago Steel with 17 playoff points (7+10) en route to the Clark Cup Championship last season.
The Steel, have won each of their past five games, including a pair of 5-3 road victories this past weekend at Sioux City and Lincoln. Dugan (8+2) and Blake McLaughlin (3+7) are tied for a league-high 10 points, and goaltender Oskar Autio remains undefeated (6-0-0-0) so far this season. The Steel are attempting to become the first USHL team to repeat as champions since the Omaha Lancers did so over two decades ago (1993 and 1994).
A full schedule of upcoming Steel game promotions is available at ChicagoSteelHockeyTeam.com. Upcoming promotional nights include Superhero Night on Black Friday, Nov. 24, Youth Replica Jersey Giveaway presented by McCue Chevy (first 500 kids 14 and under) on Saturday, Dec. 30, and the annual Chicago Blackhawks Night on Saturday, Feb. 3.
The weekend then closes with a Sunday, Nov. 5 game against I-55 rival, the Central Illinois Flying Aces, to be played at the Peoria Civic Center at 4:07 p.m. All Steel games are carried live on Mixlr (free audio) and Hockey TV (iPPV).
