Memphis Hands Firecats Their First Loss

Estero, FL- The Florida Firecats returned home Sunday with the first blemish to their record.
The Memphis Xplorers put together an impressive game to oust the Firecats by a score of 54-51. The win was the first of the short season for Memphis. Statistically, the Firecats had another great game, but they were unable to pull away with the victory.
The Firecats piled up 304 yards of offense, led by quarterback Ken Mastrole's 242 passing yards. Mastrole went 17-29 for five touchdowns and his first interception of the season. Fullbacks Steve Gorrie and Chris Morant led the rushing attack for the Firecats. Gorrie carried seven times for 32 yards and two touchdowns. Morant carried three times for 30 yards. In the air, receiver Cainon Lamb pulled in nine catches for 66 yards and one score. He also caught two two-point conversions, and he threw another one to Comone Fisher. Magic Benton caught four balls for 86 yards and two touchdowns. Anthony Snead caught two passes for 72 yards, and he found the end zone both times. Steve Gorrie and Brent Burnside added a reception each.
Leading the way defensively for the Firecats was Quincy Sorrell, who had four tackles and two pass deflections. Dante Booker added four tackles, 2.5 tackles for a loss. Cainon Lamb and Desmond Washington added three tackles. Washington also had three pass deflections.
The Firecats return home on Saturday to take on the Cape Fear Wildcats (1-1). Kickoff is set for 7:30, and tickets are available by calling (239) 390-2287.
