Melissa Gillespie Is Named as this Week's Peterborough Petes Local Minor Hockey Volunteer

February 24, 2021 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL) - Peterborough Petes News Release

(Peterborough, ON) - Melissa Gillespie, Ice Scheduler with the Peterborough Hockey Association (PHA), Head Coach of the U8 Tier 2 Petes, and Assistant Coach of the U10 Tier 1 Petes, is recognized as this week's exceptional minor hockey volunteer. The Petes want to celebrate minor hockey volunteers for their contributions to the safe return of minor hockey during this unprecedented season.

Gillespie is responsible for taking on the challenging job of evenly dividing the ice for the entire PHA organization. She is recognized as being an inspiration for women at the local minor sport level, and is celebrated for striking a balance between fun and development for all kids at her practices.

"Melissa is an inspiration for many and is a leader for diversity in our sport," says Chad Buchner, who nominated Melissa. "She plays a vital role in breaking down the gender biases that are potentially there in boys sports and by coaching on multiple teams she's ensuring we have a more inclusive environment in our community."

Each week the Petes will recognize and celebrate one volunteer from the PMHC, PHA, PGHA, and local adaptive hockey organizations for their additional time and effort in ensuring a safe environment and return for hockey.

The Petes welcome players, parents and other members of the minor hockey community to nominate deserving local volunteers by filling out this form.

Every Thursday Petes fans are encouraged to tune into the Peterborough Petes Facebook page for Thursday Night Live (TNL). Each episode of TNL features an exclusive Q&A with special celebrity guests, a musical performance, cooking segments, and merchandise offers.
