June 12, 2008 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Calgary Vipers News Release
Nate Melek tossed an absolute gem for the Calgary Vipers 2-1 victory over the St. George RoadRunners at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. In the back half of the double-header Melek picked up the complete game victory allowing only two hits and one run while striking out two as well. The right-hander from Minnesota needed only 68 pitches for his first win of the season and to hand Calgary both halves of the double-header. After tying the game in the bottom of the third the Snakes plated the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth. The Vipers are now 11-5 and remain in first place in the GBL's North Division.
St. George scored the first run of the game in the top of the third inning with a double from Greg Lemon, single by Trevor Dimick, and a RBI fielder's choice groundout off the bat of Ryan Stevenson.
Right back came the Vipers to tie the game in the bottom of the inning when Jorge Tang walked, stole second and third base and when the throw to third got away Tang broke for home plate and was interfered with by pitcher Justin Abbott in a huge hockey-like collision. Tang had to leave the game but not before scoring on the runner's interference.
The Vipers took the lead in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a double from Felix Jose and a two-out RBI double from Drew Miller for the 2-1 lead.
Melek (1-1) improved his record to even while Abbott (2-1) recorded his first defeat of the season.
The final game of this three game series will be made up in St. George, Utah when these teams meet July 7th to 9th.
