Meet the New Guy on the Block: Jeff McComb

July 28, 2022 - National Lacrosse League (NLL) - Philadelphia Wings News Release

The Philadelphia Wings team grew a little bigger this past week when they announced their newest addition to their world-class coaching staff, Jeff McComb. McComb comes to Philadelphia from the Saskatchewan Rush, where he spent the past seven seasons and won 3 NLL Championships. In addition to his impressive resume, McComb is no stranger to the guys in the Wings' locker room. McComb, know as "Bubba" coached Wings goalie Zach Higgins in Juniors, and worked closely with Wings star Ben McIntosh in Saskatchewan.

"I had the privilege of playing for Jeff for my first five seasons in the NLL. He is an outstanding coach and person," said McIntosh. "He is a mastermind when it comes to offense and just in general one of the smartest lacrosse minds in the game. I have already learned so much from Jeff and feel very lucky to be able to play for him again and continue to learn and understand the game as well as he does." Needless to say, Jeff McComb knows what it takes to lead a lacrosse team to a championship.

Joining General Manager and Head Coach Paul Day, Assistant General Manager Landon Miller, and Defensive Coordinator Ian Rubel behind the Wings bench for the 2022-2023 season, McComb is confident the Wings have what it takes to be a contender for the cup as soon as this year. "The goal at the start of each season is always to win a championship and I believe that this team is in a position where that should be our goal each year" said McComb.

When asked where he believes the Wings need the most improvement, McComb answered, "I am the new guy on the block, but I think that every team can look to improve in all areas each year. I will focus on improving the offense as much as we can by adding structure and focusing on each individual's strengths."

This past season the Wings made their first appearance in the playoffs since 2013. Ultimately, they didn't have the lengthy playoff run that we all hoped for, falling 8-9 to the San Diego Seals in the quarterfinals, but McComb is here to change that.

"The difference between winning and losing in this league is a very, very fine line. In order to be successful you need everyone on the team buying in and believing in each other and the team. If we do that we have a great chance to be successful," says an optimistic McComb. "I can't wait to coach for a team with the history and prestige of the Wings in front of some of the most knowledgeable lacrosse fans in the league!"

We still have a few more months until the Wings take the floor at the Wells Fargo Center, so in the meantime I asked McComb where he would try his first Philly cheesesteak, to which he stated "I'll be trying both Pat's and Geno's, and I'll be sure to return with a verdict on which is better."
