Niagara University product brings ECHL experience to defense competition

MACON, GA- The Macon Mayhem and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin Kerr announced today the signing of defenseman Vinny Muto to a try-out agreement.

Muto, 24, comes to Macon after being released from his contract with the Rapid City Rush of the ECHL. The 6-2, 210-pound defenseman played 12 games for Rapid City last season, recording two assists. Prior to turning professional, the Niagara Falls, New York native stayed local and played NCAA Division I hockey for Niagara University. In four seasons for Niagara University, Muto had 12 goals, 38 assists and 50 points in 136 games. His most productive season was his freshman year, when he posted five goals, 14 assists, 19 points, and a plus-four rating in 37 games.

"Vinny brings a lot of offense and puck moving ability to his game," said Mayhem Assistant Coach Leo Thomas. "He put up great numbers in college and has a little bit of experience in the Coast [ECHL], so we're thrilled to bring in a skilled player like him. We're excited to see him come in and battle for a spot on our defensive corps, and it will definitely make our [Thomas and Head Coach Kevin Kerr] decision a lot tougher."

Prior to his collegiate career, Muto played two seasons of junior hockey in the United States Hockey League (USHL) and the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL). In 56 games between the Lincoln Stars and the Sioux Falls Stampede of the USHL, he scored four goals and recorded 12 assists in 56 games. In one season with the Cowichan Valley Capitals of the BCHL, the right-hand shot scored six goals and tallied 13 assists in 57 games.

Defenseman Jake Schultz has been released from his professional try-out with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits and has joined the Mayhem on the ice for training camp in Macon. The 21-year-old joins Muto in the nine-man competition on the blue line.
