Mallards Add Feisty Playmaker

August 27, 2002 - United Hockey League (UHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release

Moline, IL – Shawn Roed, a 5'9", 172-pound playmaking center/left wing, is not shy about mixing it up with bigger players. He'll bring that feisty attitude to the Quad City Mallards after signing his first pro contract with the United Hockey League club. Mallards President/General Manager Howard Cornfield made the announcement today.

The speedy, highly skilled Roed has scored an average of nearly a point per game throughout a career that has already included stints in the United States National Team Development Program, at the age of 16; the United States Hockey League; a major college program, the University of Minnesota; and major junior hockey, with two-and-a-half stellar seasons with the Western Hockey League's Portland (Oregon) Winter Hawks.

The 21-year-old Roed shares the same hometown, White Bear Lake, Minnesota, with Mallards second-year forward Jesse Rooney. At the University of Minnesota, where he led Gophers freshmen in scoring in 1998-99, his teammates included two members of the 2001-02 Mallards, defenseman Dylan Mills and forward Aaron Miskovich.

Roed's signing continues a tradition of outstanding players from the state of Minnesota who have migrated to Quad City, including Rooney, Mills, and Miskovich, rookie signees Tony Lawrence and Mike Possin, and at least one other player who will suit up for the Mallards this fall, defenseman Andy Fermoyle.

Roed's older brother, Peter, is signed with the UHL's Kalamazoo Wings, who also strongly recruited Shawn.

Roed is the eighth player signed by the Mallards for the 2002-03 season. The others are forwards Lawrence, Bret Meyers, Patrick Nadeau, Possin, and Rooney, defenseman Fermoyle, and goaltender Joe Dimaline.

Season tickets for the 2002-2003 season of Mallards hockey are on sale now. Season ticket holders receive guaranteed seating for all 38 regular season home games, as well as for all home playoff games at no additional cost. For information, call (309) 764-7825.
