Macon Knights News Release

MACON, Ga. – The Macon Knights will assist in the Georgia Cancer Specialists’s (GCS) third annual Totes for Tots suitcase drive to benefit Georgia’s foster children. The event will be held on Martin Luther King Day, January 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 15 locations throughout the state including Macon and Milledgeville.

Mike Hold, head coach of the Knights, Maximus, the team mascot, and Knights’ staff members will help in the effort at the Macon drop off point located at 330 Hospital Drive Building C.

About “Totes For Tots”

Only new bags will be accepted and volunteers will be unable to accept bags before or after the scheduled drop-off time. All bags collected will be distributed to local DFACS offices.

Last year’s drive brought in 2,300 bags, and GCS CEO Dr. Bruce Feinberg expects that number to climb even higher this year.

“We have been amazed by the response from the community the past two years, and with that continued support this year, we hope to dramatically increase the number of totes we collect,” he said.

Although MLK day is a day off for the practice, many employees will volunteer their time in an effort to help out local foster children, give back to the community, and honor Dr. King.

The volunteer event was launched by GCS in 2002 to help foster children ease the pain of their frequent and forced relocations. Foster children often have to move their belongings in trash bags. “It’s difficult enough to constantly be moving,” said Dr. Feinberg. “Hopefully, giving them something brand new that they have ownership of will make their lives better until they reach their ultimate goal of finding a permanent home.”

In Totes’ first year, 1,000 bags were collected, making the two year total 3,300.
